IPL 2021: Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes to open for Rajasthan Royals? | Cricket News – Times of India

KKR skipper Morgan thinks so, but who’ll shore up middle order?
JAIPUR: Indecisiveness over the opening pair was a crucial factor behind Rajasthan Royals‘ poor showing in the last IPL season. They had experimented with five options before settling for the Ben Stokes-Robin Uthappa combine. Eager to make amends this time around, Royals may have settled on their opening combination for the season even before the entire team could come out of mandatory quarantine!
This season’s choice may be the explosive pair of Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes, who are set to open for the Jaipur-based franchise. Franchise sources are tight-lipped, of course, but the information was divulged by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and England white-ball captain Eoin Morgan.
“I think the more opportunities we’ve given Jos, the better he’s got. It’s very similar to Ben. The guys just keep getting better and better. So it’s our responsibility and the team’s responsibility to present opportunities for them in the biggest moments of the game. And obviously the two of them will be opening for Rajasthan this year in the IPL. So that’s going to be great to watch,” Morgan told on Sky Sports Cricket during an interaction with Nasser Hussain and Rob Key.
Among the combinations the franchise had tried were Buttler-Steve Smith, Yashaswi Jaiswal-Buttler and Jaiswal-Smith. Buttler-Stokes pair was also given a go, but only for two matches.
In this scenario, the Royals’ middle-order will be taken care of by the likes of Riyan Parag, Shivam Dube and Rahul Tewatia, who clearly lack experience.
David Miller can come in to boost the middle-order, but if Royals COO Jake Lush McCrum is to be believed, the team has decided to stick to the two foreign bowlers strategy with Chris Morris, Jofra Archer, Andrew Tye, Liam Livingstone and Mustafizur Rahman to choose from depending upon their availability. It was in an interaction on the official RR Super Royals fan page on Instagram that McCrum spoke about the team’s bowling options.
“Decision to shift from Steve Smith to Samson was to get the balance in the side. Going with two overseas bowlers is really important. Most successful teams in the IPL have done that,” the COO said in response to a question on the strategy behind making Samson the captain.
