It’s been more than one year since the COVID-19 outbreak, and India is still witnessing the worst phase of the virus spread. The country is going through the second wave of coronavirus and has been reporting more than 3 lakh cases every day. India has lodged over 2000 deaths daily due to the deadly virus in the past week, as per data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. However, no particular data on the specifications of the exact cause of death is shared along with it. Now, actress Swastika Mukherjee, who was last seen in the Sushant Singh Rajput starrer film ‘Dil Bechara’ in her tweet asked if deaths due to lack of oxygen supply could be counted as COVID-19 deaths. She wrote, ‘Death toll for Covid and those for lack of oxygen should be separate nah?…So many are dying because oxygen isn’t available, you don’t get to breathe so you die. How are we counting them as #covid deaths ? They don’t even have a chance to recover….What is this we are witnessing!’. As soon as her post went viral, netizens also expressed their agreement with Swastika’s statement and called it a ‘sorry state’. One of the users wrote, ‘Exactly…even people who are not covid patients but have other health prob. and need oxygen …they are also dying because of lack of O2 …how can we count them as #covid patients’. While, the other one said, ‘True. If co-morbidity is noted separately, then death due to unavailability of O2 should also be noted separately’. Meanwhile, social media platforms continue to be flooded with people requesting for hospital beds and availability of oxygen. Many Bollywood celebrities like Sonu Sood, Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Ayushmann Khurrana and others have also been forwarding the pleas, and personally trying to make the arrangements for the needy.
